Teaching my daughters to appreciate their body

April 10, 2016

Having had an amazing birthing experience, I now have a newfound respect for my body

I don’t know about you, but I’m just a little bit over seeing Kim Kardashian’s naked selfies plastered all over the place and even more tired of the fact that these images are constantly glorified and portrayed as “news”.

Now, hear me out, I’m all for the empowerment of women and I think Kim has a banging body, I just believe the motive behind flaunting her post-pregnancy bod is probably more of a marketing ploy than about promoting the betterment of her fellow sisters, as she claims.

At the risk of sounding like the “conservative police” I feel her approach just adds to the barrage of pressure we women are already exposed to on a daily basis and fortifies the batshit crazy idea that we all have to look a certain way in order to be “acceptable”.

Feeling the pressure since having my daughter

I too have felt (and still feel) pressure to look more this or less that and with the media constantly idolising women who lose lots of weight quickly, it’s any wonder the world gobbled up images of a svelte looking Kim K five-weeks post-pregnancy.

After having Audrey, I was very concerned about losing my post-baby weight and quickly, but this time around, I’m determined to resist the urge to be driven by my fear of not feeling “good enough” and to just go with my body, be gentle with myself and do what my body needs to do to heal properly.

I’m not sure if this new approach has to do with maturity or just a process of feeling more comfortable in my own skin, but I think having had an amazing birthing experience and having experienced the full extent to which my body can endure, I now have a newfound respect for my body and for once feel really proud of everything it has achieved.

I am a role model for my daughters

I’m also acutely aware that I now have two little girls watching my every move and therefore understand the huge responsibility I herald regarding their experience with body image.

It’s my sincere hope that I can help them appreciate the beauty and strength of their bodies and to teach them to love themselves exactly as they are and this ultimately all starts with me.
