Mitoki: get carried away

June 21, 2016

I can’t wait to go back again armed with some wine and my new ninja iPad ordering skills

Driving southward over the Story Bridge, you are very likely to notice the khaki green Il Mundo Hotel to your left. This high visibility hotel is the home of Mitoki – a Japanese tapas restaurant.

Highlights:

  • Deep fried lotus root chips
  • Agedashi takoyaki (octopus dumplings served in a delicious salty broth).

My fave: Japanese ginger churros with green tea chocolate dip

Fun fact: Each table is provided with an iPad to order

Tip: Big eaters will need quite a few dishes to fill up

Review:

Mitoki offers a novel dinner experience that is sure to have you ‘Grammin’. The staff is mostly Japanese, which is always a good sign, and the traditional decorations crafted by a member of the team are an endearing touch.

Kimono pattern serviettes and gleaming lacquer tableware enhance the theme, but it’s the ordering method that will catch your attention.

Each table is provided with an iPad loaded with a menu of pictures and prices and a very alluring ‘order now’ button. A cheerful waitress will show you the ropes and then leave you to order up a storm, but choose wisely; cancellations are not permitted once the request has been sent to the kitchen.

If you’re like me and get carried away by the pretty pictures and the button pressing, make sure to regularly check your order history and subtotal or you’ll end up with a table full of plates before you know it.

Yum – agedashi takoyaki
Yum – agedashi takoyaki

Highlights include the deep-fried lotus root chips and the agedashi takoyaki (pictured left), which are octopus dumplings served in a delicious salty broth.

Those seeking something a little more familiar will enjoy the karaage chicken, pork gyoza or a range of fresh sushi and sashimi.

Don’t pass up on the Japanese ginger churros with green tea chocolate dip for dessert, but you may need to share.

The rich donut sticks are fried to perfection, and the green tea chocolate will have you scooping out the ramekin with your finger to enjoy every last drop… or maybe that’s just me.

A BYO license is the final tick that ensures Mitoki gets my glowing approval, and I can’t wait to go back again armed with some wine and my new ninja iPad ordering skills.
