One of my friends has been raving about the musical Come From Away since she saw it in Melbourne in 2019. We always thought we’d have to travel to Sydney or Melbourne to see it. Now the news has been released that in March 2020, Brisbane will be included in the tour of Australia. Yes, you may squeal! Tickets will be available from November 26, 2020.
This Tony and Olivier Award winning Broadway show tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. This breathtaking new musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and helmed by Tony winning best director, Christopher Ashley is a must see.
This musical has been described as inspiring, uplifting and a masterpiece and will be just the antidote needed in uncertain times. It is an unforgettably moving story of the power of friendship and the human spirit , that follows the incredible real life journey of 7000 air passengers who became grounded in Gander, Newfoundland, in the wake of the September 11 tragedy. The small community that welcomed the ‘ come from aways ‘ into their lives provided hope and compassion for those in need.
It will be a poignant reminder for me and one of my best friends, as our husbands were travelling to Denver, Colorado and heading onto Washington at the time of the attacks. Overnight we had no idea where they were or if they had been affected. Thankfully they made it to their destination, unlike thousands of others. To hear of the generous spirit of this little town restores your faith in the power of human kindness.
Producer Rodney Rigby said, “ As the world collectively faces one of the greatest challenges of modern times, Come From Away, reminds us that compassion is at the core of our humanity. This is a story about unity, and about acting with kindness regardless of differences. “
The writers, Irene and David, travelled to Newfoundland and interviewed thousands of locals, compiling their stories to share with the world. Come From Away will be playing for a strictly limited season from March 28, 2021. This world renowned show will be the first major musical to open in Queensland since the shutdown brought on by the global pandemic. I suggest you go along and have a gander at this remarkable story. We all need some hope, music and dance in our lives.
