Aria nominated virtuosic violinist, composer and vocalist Véronique Serret announces February concerts in NSW, QLD and WA with special guest, William Barton.
She plays six string electric violin like a boss, has a haunting voice for the ages, is an orchestral concertmaster with the swagger of a Mauritian gypsy, and in May last year she released her first solo album called ‘Migrating Bird’, which was immediately nominated for an Aria award. So who is Véronique Serret? She Society had to find out more.
Véronique Serret is an artist who defies any classical stereotypes. Learning the violin from the age of three, she grew up in the Western Sydney suburb of Guildford. She has worked extensively with revered companies including Bangarra Dance Theatre,
Australian Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Dance Company, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and as concertmaster of the Darwin Symphony Orchestra. What a resume!
One of her career highlights was being invited to tour in Joanna Newsom’s band where she played for ten years. Her skills directing strings sections have been taken up by Damon Albarn, Mike Patton, Gurrumul, Neil Finn and Sarah Blasko.
‘Migrating Birds’ is her first album in which she has written and performed all parts by herself. This album sees Véronique using her voice for the first time throughout her compositions. It also features field recordings from her regular walks around Mt Coo-
tha. It is completely unique and very special.
The three concerts just announced will see Véronique performing the full album with the band, and as a special guest, William Barton on didgeridoos and vocals. She’ll be playing here in Brisbane then Murwillumbah and at the Perth Festival from February 14 to 19.
In Véronique’s own words she says , “ When the world stood still and our cities took pause, I turned to Mother Nature. I walked and walked and listened deeply. This is what she said to me.”
This multi – talented artist approaches her work in her own way. Véronique Serret bridges the gap between contemporary and classical music to create her own unique sound and that is why #sheinspires.
