Creating A Zen Home: Bring Serenity into Your Life

June 22, 2018

If you spend half of your day working like crazy or doing errands and chores, you might perceive coming back to your home as a moment of true heaven! But, what if that moment isn’t really heavenly? Well, then it’s time to bring some peace, relaxation and Zen vibe into your home and life. Here’s how to do it!

Mess causes stress

The first step towards serenity is making your environment clean and tidy. Clutter (and by clutter, we think unnecessary decoration, various trinkets and literal garbage) negatively affects your mood, motivation, relaxation and mindfulness. So, take 10 minutes every day to clean, declutter and organize your home. Once you find yourself in a tidy space, you’ll automatically feel less stressed and happier. Plus, you’ll always have a beautiful and clean background for your Instagram snaps!

Opt for neutral and natural colors

Neutral colors that can often be found in nature have a very Zen vibe and help boost the overall effect of calmness. Bold, neon colors might look good but they usually make us feel invigorated and ready for action, instead of making us relax. However, that doesn’t mean you have to live in a sterile environment completely devoid of color! A few accents here and there will break the monotony and add visual interest to the space while not being too “in-your-face”.

Boost softness

Sure, hardwood and laminate floors are beautiful and practical, but they are not exactly warm, soft and Zen-inspiring. Luckily, you can easily add some extra warmth and softness into your home with rugs and throws. Opt for handmade rugs made of natural fibers like wool or 100% cotton. These carpets will further improve well-being (they won’t off-gas and pollute your air) and allow you to enjoy the cozy softness under your toes. Sometimes, that’s all you need to feel more relaxed and happy in your home!

Choose comfy furniture

Speaking of softness and coziness, don’t forget to Zen-up your furniture! Pieces that evoke Zen style in your home are often very simple with clean lines, no unnecessary details and complicated patterns and ornaments. However, they are spacious, soft and cozy and allow ultimate relaxation. Nothing really beats comfy lounges that are perfect for enjoying your first coffee in the morning, taking your afternoon naps and relaxing in front of the TV in the evening! Opt for natural colors and materials that will fit into your Zen vibe and you’ll have an amazing living room that exudes comfort and eliminates stress.

Zen for better night’s sleep

If you often feel tired and sleepy but can never seem to get a good night’s sleep, it might be time to improve your bedroom. One of the most important things to pay attention to is your bed placement. For the best relaxation, place it next to a natural light source and avoid turning it towards the door. This positioning will make you feel more relaxed and get your circadian rhythm in tune. Keep things simple with only a few decorative elements in the bedroom and opt for those décor pieces that will further enhance comfort and coziness. Think decorative pillows, throws and calming artwork. If you find reading before bed relaxing, introduce some handy nightstands for your books, just make sure they fit your overall design!

Choose airy fabrics

What is it that pops into your mind when you hear the word ZEN? Do you think about dark and snowy woods, raging seas and heavy skies? Or do you think about flowing streams, light breeze and clear blue skies that leave you showered in sunlight? It’s probably the latter, isn’t it? So, fill your home with airy and flowing fabrics that will make you feel light, cool and comfortable. Pay special attention to your window treatment! Your curtains should let enough light and fresh air inside, but also provide you with ample privacy and draught protection. Your safest bet are natural fabrics like linen and cotton.

Evoke relaxation through aromatherapy

It’s amazing what a simple scented candle or an oil diffuser can do for your mood and stress levels! These are completely natural and practical ways to calm your nerves, improve mindfulness and even get to nice and sleepy before bed! Opt for lavender, lime, grapefruit or eucalyptus!

These simple design tricks will help you forget all about your work, meetings, chores and responsibilities and allow you to achieve Nirvana as soon as you cross your doorstep!
