Kate Hudson needs no introduction. While she’s best known for her roles on screen, it’s the many other roles Kate plays that make her so unique. She’s a mum of two boys, founder of the hugely successful activewear brand Fabletics, best-selling author of Pretty Happy and her newest book Pretty Fun, as well as a passionate advocate for women and girls around the word – last month, she was one of 300 Hollywood women to launch Time’s Up, an initiative that helps women fight sexual harassment in the workplace.

Kate was just 21 when she played Penny Lane in the movie Almost Famous – a role that earned her a Golden Globe and a nomination for an Academy Award. Since then, she’s gone on to star in everything from your favourite comedies like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Fool’s Gold to dramas like Deepwater Horizon and the recent Marshall.

We’re beyond excited to announce that we’re bringing Kate to Australia to speak exclusively for Business Chicks in February. This is our first blockbuster event of 2018 - tickets are now on sale here!

TOAST THE YEAR OF THE DOG ACROSS MORE THAN 50 SYDNEY VENUES FOR BARS MARCH 2018

Month-long celebration sees Sydney’s best bars serve up charitable cocktails for animals in need

Canine and kitten crusaders unite, because Sydney’s only month-long celebration of bar culture in support of animal welfare is back with bite next month.

As the lunar Year of the Dog kicks off, BARS MARCH returns for a ninth year, bringing together more than 50 of the city’s most iconic venues to raise a toast in support of Animal Welfare League NSW.

Under the banner #haveadrinksaveadog, participating venues will create and sell special BARS MARCH cocktails throughout the month, with a portion of proceeds going to the worthy charity – which helps to shelter and rehome abandoned, surrendered and neglected animals.

Participating venues for 2018 include The Carrington (Surry Hills), Frisco Hotel (Woolloomooloo); Kittyhawk (CBD), The Lobo Plantation (CBD), Misfits Bar & Dining (Redfern), East Village Sydney (Darlinghurst), Big Poppa’s (Darlinghurst), Whirly Bird (Pyrmont), O Bar Dining (CBD), Watsons Bay Hotel, (Watson’s Bay) and The Royal Leichhardt (Leichhardt).

And the fun’s even spread to Byron, with Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. flying the flag up in the north!

Bars interested in participating can also sign-up until March 4 at www.barsmarch.com

In the name of furry, charitable fun, BARS MARCH 2018 will be the biggest celebration yet of Sydney’s top-notch bar culture. We'll drink to that!

Flicks4Change Film Festival will host an afternoon of socially conscious films, in association with Short+Sweet Film on Saturday 17th March at The Tom Mann Theatre.

Attendees will be encouraged to vote on their favourite films, interact with the nonprofit partners and their exhibit, and speak up in the town hall style panel discussion that will include celebrity activists, philanthropic leaders, and the filmmakers.

Of the festivals unique mission, Festival Director James Hawthorn said, Our goal is to connect difference makers with those that want to make a difference. Films and art have the special ability to rise above the fray and affect people personally about some really important issues. By putting a motivated audience in the same room as the organizations that are tackling these issues head-on, buoyed by the support of celebrity. At the end of the films the audience has a shared experience, a shared understanding and if done right, a change can occur. Flicks4Change believes this is the perfect time for a truly transformative dialogue to start.”

The films topics will include: Disability and inclusion, mental health, Aboriginal affairs, LGBT issues, animal rights, suicide prevention, human trafficking and environmental issues.

WOW – Women of the World

Southbank Centre's WOW – Women of the World festival is a global festival movement launched by Jude Kelly CBE in London in 2010 (with the first festival in March 2011) that celebrates women and girls, and looks at the obstacles that stop them from achieving their potential. To date, WOW has been in over 20 locations on five continents, including New York and Baltimore in the USA; Ake in Nigeria; Hargeisa in Somaliland; Alexandria in Egypt, Tampere in Finland, Beijing in China; Karachi in Pakistan, Kathmandu in Nepal, Dhaka in Bangladesh; Colombo in Sri Lanka; more than 10 locations in the UK including Bradford, Perth in Scotland and Cardiff; and across Australia in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and in Katherine. It has reached more than 1.5 million people worldwide and this number is growing year on year.

Each festival across the world – made up of talks, debates, music, activism, mentoring, pop-ups and performance – celebrates women and girls, takes a frank look at what prevents them from achieving their potential, and raises awareness globally of the issues they face and possible solutions. It reaches girls and women, boys and men from a broad range of social backgrounds and supplies a completely different sense of action and energy than a conventional conference approach. Speakers have included Malala Yousafzai, Christine Lagarde, Angela Davis, Salma Hayek, Annie Lennox, Gordon Brown, Julie Walters, Patrick Stewart and many more including hundreds of women and men who don’t have public profiles but are working everyday to achieve gender equality. More than 25,000 people came to WOW London in 2017, thousands more have come to WOWs across the world and festival organisers have collaborated on cross-continental projects. For further information please visit wow.southbankcentre.co.uk

Tickets: Click here for more information

Tickets for WOW are sold as one, two or three day passes. This will enable you to choose between a range of conversations, workshops, lunchtime performances and demonstrations, which will take place every day from 9am to 5pm. The first 200 people to purchase an early bird three day ticket will also be invited to attend a very special opening ceremony on Thursday 5 April. Early bird ticket buyers will also get access to a Hot Brown Honey presale available until Tuesday 5 December. Access to each day’s sessions will be on a first-come-first-in basis. The final times and venues for each session will be available online in early March.

The flamboyantly eccentric troubadour returns to interpret his songs on a grand piano.  In this intimate performance, with his accent-thick vocals and dark, biographical lyrics, Patrick Wolf’s otherworldly stories will be hauntingly grounded.

The visually striking indie singer-songwriter hailing from South London is known for his confessional vocals and era-bending musical style.  A self-trained pianist, singer and producer,  Wolf is also a classically-trained violinist, harpist and composer, yet it is the imagination and ingenuity in his songwriting that have led to universal acclaim.

In 2013, Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues were jailed in Eygpt for doing their job. PEN International, the world's leading association of writers, condemned this decision and agitated for the journalists' release.

Last year, 262 journalists – a record number – were jailed around the world, most for alleged anti-government activities. In an era of 'fake news' and populism, freedom of expression and freedom of the press are under attack. This discussion, hosted by Founding Editor Julianne Schultz, will explore what this means, what is at stake and what can be done.

Two of the country’s most popular and charismatic performers, David Hobson and Natalie Christie Peluso, return to OperaQ’s main stage this season as perfectly paired lovers Hanna and Count Danilo, in a lush and spectacular new production of Franz Lehár’s ever-popular The Merry Widow.

Celebrated Australian director and choreographer Graeme Murphy sets Lehár’s classic operetta amid the Art Deco glamour, silky ballroom gowns, and intrigue of the salons and cabarets of Paris, with romantic trysts taking place in a Monet Garden!

With money as its motivating force,The Merry Widow is a slick comedy of manners and mismatched marriages. Centred around the enduring yet prickly romance between Hanna and her playboy ex-lover Danilo, it waltzes along with couples falling in and out of love, and – after many misunderstandings – a final happy ending. And it’s all set to unforgettable melodies and dazzling dance numbers!

A runaway hit of its era, this refreshing new production of The Merry Widow will seduce you, just as the characters on stage seduce each other, with effortless charm and grace, by transporting you to a glamorous world of waltz, high fashion and glittering parties.

2018 is a landmark year for the University of Queensland Press (UQP) as we celebrate our 70th year as a fiercely independent writer’s press.

To recognise UQP’s cultural contribution across seven decades of great Australian storytelling, we invite you to join us at the launch of our newly commissioned anthology, Reading the Landscape: A Celebration of Australian Writing.

Hosted by literary editor of The Australian Stephen Romei, the launch will feature a panel of three UQP authors – Matthew Condon, Julie Koh, and Melissa Lucashenko – discussing their anthology contributions and what it means to be a storyteller in the 21st century.

Tickets cost $10 and include a light lunch- get your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/launch-of-reading-the-landscape-a-celebration-of-australian-writing-uqp-tickets-46429129777?aff=es2

Reading the Landscape offers a unique narrative journey through fiction, non-fiction, and poetry as twenty-five UQP authors past and present consider notions of legacy, heritage, vision and hope. Participating authors include: Ali Alizadeh, Venero Armanno, Larissa Behrendt, Lily Brett, Gabrielle Carey, Peter Carey, Matthew Condon, David Brooks, Karen Foxlee, Kári Gíslason, Rodney Hall, Steven Herrick, Sarah Holland-Batt, Nicholas Jose, Mireille Juchau, Julie Koh, Melissa Lucashenko, Patti Miller, David Malouf, James Moloney, Josephine Rowe, and Ellen van Neerven. The introduction has been written by literary critic, academic and author, Bernadette Brennan.

Matthew Condon is a prize-winning Australian novelist and journalist. He is currently on staff with the Courier-Mail’s Qweekend magazine. He began his journalism career with the Gold Coast Bulletin in 1982 and subsequently worked for leading newspapers and journals including the Sydney Morning Herald, the Daily Telegraph and Melbourne's Sunday Age. His recent books include Little Fish Are Sweet, All Fall Down, and Jacks and Jokers. His next book will be released by UQP in November 2018.

Julie Koh was born in Sydney to Chinese-Malaysian parents. She studied politics and law at the University of Sydney, then quit a career in corporate law to pursue writing. Her debut collection of short stories, Portable Curiosities, was published by UQP in 2016. Her short stories have appeared in The Best Australian Stories 2014 and 2015, The Sleepers Almanac, The Lifted Brow, Seizure Online, Kyoto Journal, The Fish Anthology and Fixi Novo’s HEAT. Julie has been a finalist in the Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards Written Word category, longlisted for the Australian Book Review’s Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize, and shortlisted for the Overland Victoria University Short Story Prize for New and Emerging Writers.

Melissa Lucashenko is a Goorie author of Bundjalung and European heritage. She has been publishing books with UQP since 1997, with her first novel, Steam Pigs, winning the Dobbie Literary Award and shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and regional Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. Hard Yards (1999) was shortlisted for the Courier-Mail Book of the Year and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards, and Mullumbimby (2013) won the Queensland Literary Award and was longlisted for the Stella Prize, the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Kibble Literary Award. She has also written two novels for teenagers, Killing Darcy (UQP, 1998) and Too Flash (IAD Press, 2002). In 2013 Melissa won the inaugural long-form Walkley Award for her Griffith REVIEW essay ‘Sinking Below Sight: Down and Out in Brisbane and Logan’. Her new book, Too Much Lip, will be released by UQP in August.

The Red Carpet Recognition Night – Celebrating Multicultural Australia. Which will be held on the 10th of November 2018 at the Brisbane Parliament House. In this year's celebration, we would like to show our gratitude towards all individuals who have supported our events in the previous years. It will be a spectacular night of cultural performance, fashion show, food and drinks.

Initiated in 2015, Red Carpet Multicultural Fashion Show has attracted more than 400 attendees and 200 models from 30 different countries. Red Carpet Functions aspires to celebrate the diversity of Brisbane’s communities and emphasises on the appreciation of its diverse cultures. Our organisation recognises that fashion is a common denominator among all cultures, therefore our Fashion Show highlights the traditional attires of the country of origin of our participants. This show aims to eliminate the cultural barriers among diverse groups and inspires our community to further appreciate each other’s differences.

Another important aspect of our fashion show is the focus on inclusivity, believing that everyone deserve to walk on a runway. In the conception of this Fashion Show, I invite all artists, performers and models to participate regardless of their physical attributes or mental disabilities. This show is the result of my experiences and the barriers I have seen across my career. By providing a show available to everyone, I aim to challenge the stereotypes of beauty and fashion by celebrating the differences of all men and women of Brisbane.
