Cirque Du Soleil LUZIA Red Carpet Premiere – Ruth Greening

October 11, 2024

Cirque du Soleil LUZIA red carpet premiere was an absolute blast. From the moment the huge crowd walked through the Big Top entrance for the red carpet premiere, our fantastical journey into a waking dream of Mexico had begun.

Greeted with complimentary drinks and tasty Mexican canapes, our tootsies graced the temporary floor-boarded grassed area meeting up with fellow admirers, posing for photo shoots, and best of all chatting to the exquisitely costumed performers before they took us on their breathtaking ride into magical Mexico, the country behind the LUZIA conception.  Inspired by the people, places and stories that define this country from the folklore of old to the urban landscape of today.

It was a surreal world that stimulated our creative senses. As it happened, even the patrons participated in the visual aura, dressed in themed costumes and infusing the live outdoor Mexican band with a plethora of colours.  It truly was an extraordinary, wonderful evening.

A little about Mexico

Its official legal name is the United Mexican States, a federal republic organised into three powers, executive, legislative and judicial, and is made up of 32 federal entities including Mexico City, the capital of this Latin American country.

Spanish is the most widely spoken language and with 68 indigenous languages, it is understandable why the culture is rich and colourful. Known for their appreciation of art and music Mexican culture has a vibrant and creative tradition.

Mexico has been described as a land of extremes with high mountains and deep canyons in the centre of the country. It has sweeping deserts in the north and dense rainforests in the south and east. A country embedded with ancient ruins, dazzling bohemian villages, and impressive beaches, all-encompassing their magnificent cuisine.

There are traditional dresses and dancing dresses. Traditionally The Huilpil (a sleeveless tunic) with various textures & designs is created in the cloth as it is woven, embroidered, lace, braid, and ribbons worn with a floral headpiece, as worn by the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo when she adopted the traditional Tehuana-style dress of Zapotec women who stood as symbols of economic independence and power. The spectacular curious designs and colours are embedded in LUZIA ‘s dance and dress.

Outstanding Cirque du Soleil LUZIA

All of Mexico’s culture manifested itself in Cirque du Soleil’s outstanding production of LUZIA. Full of visual surprises, the breathtaking acrobatic performances by forty-seven artists keep you on the edge of your seat. Imposing costumes and powerful musical scores for dance and sound filled the arena with acoustic pleasures from both classical and contemporary Mexico.

It is difficult to know where to begin. Every performance held a remarkable jaw-dropping uniqueness that dazzled the audience visually and emotionally.  The phenomenal acrobatic artistry, athleticism, strength, ability, choreography, and visual effects, are indescribable.

Every act is spectacular including the clever hilarious acts to make us laugh. It is a celebration of Mexican culture including life-like animal imagery, flowing silk butterflies, and dancing horses synonymous with Mexican folklore. We are taken on a tour of the Mexican people and the arts.

Daring hoop diving on treadmills balancing on a moving surface, graceful pole dancing, mind bobbling high flying acrobatics that put you on the edge of your seat as you ooh and ahh feeling nervous hoping they landed safely in the right spot, which they did.

Acrobatics, rope twists and turns high up in the Big Top,  contortionists bending their bodies into unearthly shapes, balancing and strength we can only dream about.

Then there was water. Who could have imagined that water is the source of inspiration for many of the acts? Something I have never seen before. It was awe-inspiring, I could not take my eyes off the performers spiralling like snakes,  twirling through showering rain.

Wheel artists roll and spin under raining water as trapeze artists fly and twirl through pouring showers.

We were treated to a captivating display when the rain showered down in beautiful shapes and forms. It was mesmerizing.

There is lots of dancing in Mexico and FUZIA costumes were all symbols of their traditions. The costumes are extraordinary, their colours are brilliantly exaggerated for the most stunning effects.  For LUZIA there are over a thousand costumes, all indeed a visual celebration of Mexico. The detail in the stitching and embellishments was mind-boggling and being a sewer I could not even imagine the amount of work involved to create wonderous captivating costumes.

Cirque du Soleil LUZIA is a place to escape, forget about the world around us and allow our souls to be absorbed in a dream of Mexico. It was a wonderful means of celebrating 25 years of Cirque du Soleil in Australia.

Thank you Cirque du Soleil, She Society and Kath Rose & Associates. It was just the tonic we needed, our souls soothed.
