This week kicked off with my first movie for 2025 We Live In Time. It wasn’t with a bang, it began with a beautiful romantic and emotional story between two of my favourite actors, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.
Florence Pugh (as Almut) is an English actor known for her diverse roles in films like The Falling, Lady Macbeth, TV series Marcella, The Little Drummer Girls, Fighting with My Family, Midsommar, Little Women, Black Widow, A Good Person, Oppenheimer, Dune Part Two, Vulture, and now We Live In Time. She also spent time living with her family in Spain. She tends to gravitate towards roles that terrify or challenge her.
As soon as I read that Andrew Garfield was playing the role of Almut’s partner Tobias, I couldn’t help but think about Spiderman as I am such a fan. But his talents go beyond my superhero. He has English/American citizenship which confirms why his accent was authentic. His roles are also diverse as in The Social Network, the Spider-Man series, Hacksaw Ridge, Tick Tick Boom, Boy A, Never Let Me Go, Silence, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and the TV series Under the Banner of Heaven. He has also appeared in Broadway and West End productions.
Florence and Andrew (both Marvel alums) are perfectly matched for We Live In Time, their chemistry strong and sensual. What captures me the most about them is their facial expressions, particularly the power behind their eyes. They have this down pat.
The Story
Two people, Almut and Tobias are brought together in a surprise encounter that could have been a disaster. Despite the situation, it must have been fate for them to meet as it was from here they blossomed as a couple.
Falling for each other their story spans over decades as we are taken on a snapshot journey of their time together. Their relationship is one we would all love to have. Establishing a home, becoming a family, having a deep love and connection with your soul mate and being truthful. This is a portrait of a marriage that couldn’t be more perfect.
Although, as in true life, we are often dosed with adversity somewhere down the line. Almut and Tobias’s dedication to each other is proven as they unexpectedly embark on an uncharted path when confronted with a difficult truth that rocks their solid foundation. It is then they learn to cherish the here and now, living for the moment as their love story takes on an unconventional path. There are revelatory fleeting moments that may buckle your heart, put a smile on your face, or make you sad and bring on the tears. In this story, every minute counts.
