Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season has received a record-setting 32 nominations for this year’s Emmys leading HBO back to dominance over Netflix.

The cable giant picked up a total of 137 nominations for this year’s awards, while streaming giant Netflix was not far behind, with 117. Last year, Netflix had more nominees than HBO.

If Game of Thrones successfully defends its best drama series title and claims a fourth trophy, it will join a list of most-honoured dramas that includes Hill Street Blues, LA Law, The West Wing and Mad Men.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington were both nominated for lead actor and actress in a drama series, while a slew of other cast members will come up against each other in the support categories — including Lena Headey who appeared in just four of the six episodes of the final season, and even then did not stray far from her balcony at the Red Keep.

Last year’s best comedy series, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, led the comedy pack with 20 nominations, including for its star and defending champion Rachel Brosnahan. She will be up against Emmy record-holder Julia Louis-Dreyfus of Veep.

Veep received nine nominations for its final season, a warm farewell that was not to be for The Big Bang Theory, which failed to capture a best comedy nod or for any of its actors.

Other top nominees include Chernobyl with 19 nominations, Saturday Night Live with 18, and When They See Us, the miniseries that dramatised the Central Park Five case and its aftermath, with 16.

A-list stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney were seen as the biggest snubs, failing to get nominations in their high-profile returns to the small screen in Homecoming and Catch-22 respectively.

The latest seasons of past Emmy winners Big Little Lies and The Handmaid’s Tale were not broadcast during this year’s eligibility period.

The 71st Emmy Awards will be held on Monday, September 23, Australian time.
