m4m presents…The Social Culture – February 2021

February 25, 2021

The team at m4m present The Social Culture for October 2020! Get the latest on all the updates and changes to our favourite social platforms for this month.

From an influx of Bernie Sanders memes, to the #FreeBritney Movement, the biggest news that we have all been hit with is Facebook’s removal of Australian news from its platform. If you’ve been living under a rock or just not a regular Facebook user, you may not have noticed that all news publishers and in some instances bloggers have been removed from the social media giant.

This is all thanks to the Government’s proposed News Media Bargaining Code that would force tech giants like Facebook and Google to pay Aussie news outlets for sharing their content so, in reply to this Zuckerberg stripped all Australian news accounts from the site (plus a few charities, schools, businesses that didn’t even report on news). Thankfully, the Australian Government and Facebook have come to an agreement that will allow news accounts to return to their regular posting habits, which we’ll dive deeper in our newsletter below.

Facebook vs Australian Government

Hallelujah! Facebook will bring back Aussie news after the Australian government agreed to make changes to its proposed News Media Bargaining Code. Late last week, Facebook removed all news outlets and publishers on the site, blocking many large news sites such as ABC, Channel 9, The Sydney Morning Herald and many more.

The new amendments to the code include giving tech companies and publishers two months to reach agreements with one another, meaning Facebook would not be immediately forced into making payments defined by media companies. The new updates also suggest that if digital platforms were to voluntarily contribute enough money to the Australian news industry, they could avoid the code entirely, at least for now. Time will tell where this mess will end up but hopefully independent news outlets and bloggers will be able to get back up on their feet asap!

Blogs translated to Podcasts? Spotify’s new plan..

Interested in starting a podcast, but have no idea where to begin? You may soon have a new option, with Spotify working on a new process that will enable people to convert their written WordPress blog posts into audio content. Spotify is in the works with WordPress to translate written content directly into podcasts via the podcast distributor Anchor. Meet Clubhouse, the audio only app

There’s a new kid on the social media block, which may have a lasting impact on the social media world. At only less than a year old, the app is already valued at US$1 billion and has venture capitalists scrambling to invest.

So what is Clubhouse?

Think of it as an audio-chat social network, where users can listen in on other people’s live conversations. Sounds creepy, but these people want to be heard and can even include some celebrities that use the app such as Elon Musk, Oprah Winfrey and Drake. With no images or videos, the app is entirely based around audio with many users raving that it is much more intimate and “live” than text-based social media.

At the moment, the app is giving off exclusive vibes as you need an invitation from an exisiting Clubhouse user to get access and download the app. For more info on this rising app, click here.
