Mum Celebrates First Mother’s Day with Miracle Twins

Sharnee Beck feared she might never celebrate Mother’s Day – but this Sunday she’ll cuddle two miracle babies in her arms.

Twins Chase and Aaliyah were born three months premature at Mater Mothers’ Hospital and faced a daunting struggle for survival.

But thanks to the expert care of the medical team at Mater’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit– and the love of their doting mum – the twins are now thriving and about to celebrate their first birthday.

The twins were born by an emergency caesarean section 28 weeks. Chase weighed only 1.24kg and Aaliyah a tiny 1.1kg.

The pair spent almost four months in hospital, including 80 days in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit, before Mrs Beck was finally able to take them home.

“After giving birth I didn’t know if they would survive,” Mrs Beck said.

“My babies were so tiny when they were born. From where they started to where they’ve come is amazing. 

“Both of them came home on oxygen and now Chase only needs it when he sleeps.”

Mrs Beck said her first Mother’s Day would be about celebrating the twins’ first year of life.

“I want to acknowledge the time we have had together and the time I have had being a mum to them,” she said.

The happy and healthy pair will celebrate their first birthdays on Wednesday May 11.

Mater Mothers’ Hospital Director of Clinical Services Maree Reynolds said more than 2000 seriously ill and premature babies are cared for at the hospital’s Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) each year.

“Sunday will however be a very special day for Sharnee following the difficult journey she has had with her two babies in hospital for a long time,” Ms Reynolds said.
