For founders, Chris Caley and Melanie McVean, a friend’s personal experience with the challenges of mental health, fuelled an instant need to support the mental health support organisation.
“When we to spoke to people about mental health and wellness, everyone we spoke to had a story of people around them that have been significantly affected this year. It was like pulling on a thread that unravels the whole cardigan, and we realised the scale of this was just massive,” Chris said.
Melanie said the new fragrance was designed specifically to create a sense of happiness and wellbeing, perfectly aligning to Beyond Blue’s mission.
“Smell is one of our most sensitive senses. It connects straight to our emotions and memories, and can lift us up. With the uncertainty of this year, we designed this new fragrance with this psychological process in mind to help generate positive emotions,” said Melanie.
“The fragrance was inspired by the idea of walking through a field of wildflowers, where you can stop and ‘smell the flowers’ everywhere you go.”
Speaking to the support for Beyond Blue, Melanie said mental health and wellbeing has been the elephant in the room throughout the pandemic, and wants to support those who have had a challenging year mentally.
“Beyond Blue is such a vital service within our community, and even more so as we head into one of the busiest and most stressful times of the year.
“For us, the synergy between our new fragrance and the resources and services Beyond Blue provide is just the perfect fit. We hope this contribution will enable more Aussies to access help when they need it, on their terms.”
“Every dollar of this generous donation will go to the Beyond Blue Support Service, which is staffed by mental health professionals who can provide free counselling, advice and referrals over the phone or via webchat and email 24/7,” said Georgie Harman, Beyond Blue’s CEO.
From March to November 2020, there has been a 43% increase in calls to the Support Services compared to the same time in 2019.
This festive season, Beyond Blue is inviting people to use their social media channels, holiday voicemails and out-of-office messages to support colleagues, friends and loved ones.
The new Always Available campaign, which starts this week, encourages people to update their message spaces so they direct people towards Beyond Blue if they are themselves unavailable. Detailed instructions on how to do this can be found at www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/message-space.
