#SheReviews The Hating Game

Based on the Bestselling Novel The Hating Game by Sally Thorne, and published in over 25 countries, her book was ranked #7 in Oprah Magazine’s 20 Best Romance Novels of All-Time behind Gone With the Wind, Me Before You, Pride and Prejudice, It Ends with Us, The Thorn Birds and Outlander.

The Hating Game rom com evolves around Lucy Hutton the nice girl who is charming and accommodating with a competitive nature and prides herself on being loved by everyone in her office, apart from one, Joshua Templeman. Let the games begin.

The Story

So when her efficient, impeccably dressed Mr. Cool co-worker Joshua, unlike the rest of her workmates, refuses to be enraptured by her charm, Lucy embarks on a ruthless game of one-upmanship.

It appears the feeling is mutual as the two are trapped in a shared office every day of the week. It quickly becomes evident that both are ridiculously competitive to the point where Lucy cannot let Joshua beat her at anything. Her dilemma manifests into a bigger problem when a huge promotion is up for grabs with both she and Josh in the running for the role.

This is where things become complicated and a challenge. High achiever Lucy aims for professional success without compromising her ethics yet finds herself growing attracted to Josh. If Lucy wins the game and the promotion she will be Joshua’s boss and decides if she loses she will resign.

Life can work in strange ways as it did when an innocent elevator ride changed things by one kiss followed by Lucy’s steamy dreams. Lucy wonders whether she has Joshua all wrong and that maybe he doesn’t hate her as she had assumed and maybe it is all just a game for him. It is undeniable over time they both like being around each other even when they claim they hate each other.

The Hating Game is a light-hearted movie where, as a female, you place yourself in her shoes wondering how you would approach the situation. I could say the same for men watching Joshua play his part.

It appears the actors had fun playing through the amount of humour in their roles and I felt their real selves were close to the surface of their characters.
