The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is a movie we could all do with right now. I appreciated being part of a large audience attending the preview this week at Event Cinemas in Brisbane City, and at the end of the film, everyone walked away happy.
Like most others we were intrigued by the film’s title, and as the plot thickened I began to understand the unbearable weight of such massive talent and respect how this wonderful creative production was so cleverly written.
It is an action-comedy with plenty of one-liners, regular bursts of audience laughter, heart racing suspense, majestic views of the Croatian coast (I recognised the beautiful city of Dubrovnik), an anecdotal plot to retain your attention and the ever-faithful contribution from the CIA. Gee, we had a good time.
Nicolas Cage took us on a fun journey playing a fictionalised version of himself Nick Cage, including a figment of his imagination version of himself as a younger wild boy. He was fantastic as was the supporting cast.
The chemistry between Nick Cage and Pedro Pascal proves that opposites can attract. Pascal is known for his role as the Red Viper in Game of Thrones and in this film playing Javi Gutierrez a billionaire with family links to the mafia
Both men were electric and the highlight of the show as they unmistakably had fun playing their characters, pitching well scripted lyrics at one another. It all seemed so natural.
The Story
Nick Cage had reached a crossroads in his life. Creatively he was unfulfilled, restless, and in the meanwhile irresponsible, ignoring the consequences of his precipitous spending habits, close to financial ruination.
He is forced to accept a $1 million offer to attend a birthday event for billionaire super fan, Javi. This is where Nick’s life takes a dramatic turn and his life ends up in danger.
The Academy Award® winning iconic actor must take on the role of a lifetime as himself. He has no choice but to live up to his own legend and play out his most iconic on-screen characters to satisfy his wealthy obsessive admirer, and eventually save himself and his family.
The wonderful diverse representation of skilled actors from Chile, Ireland, America, Italy, England, and Spain held a uniqueness about them that added to the success of this film.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is also about friendships, loyalties and priorities.
