#SheWatches – The Realm

May 23, 2019

The hit of the recent Spanish Film Festival was The Realm and it’s easy to see why. I love a good drama / thriller and this one is sophisticated and enthralling. This 2018 film directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen tells the story of a politician and his extravagant lifestyle which is financed by bribes and kickbacks. This puts his whole party in jeopardy. After a leaked tape exposes Manuel’s underhand dealings to the public eye, he meets the cruel underbelly of his own system. From here this event reveals to him the realm of of those even guiltier and more cold-blooded than he is and he becomes a whistleblower.

The film stars the brilliant Antonio de la Torre, as Manuel , a cocky and smug politician with a motormouth. This movie is one of the year’s best thrillers. It leaves you tense as the final act unfolds. A fine ensemble cast including the beautiful Barbara Lennie, Josep Maria Pou and Nacho Fresneda round out this modern day tale full of suspense, corruption and the behind – the scenes world of  politics. Winner in the Goya Awards 2019, Feroz Awards 2019 and Cinema Writers Circle Awards 2019 , The Realm is a must see for fans of intrigue and suspense. A timely film for those of us here in Australia who’ve just experienced the rigours of a surprising election. The Realm is playing in cinemas Australia wide.
