Operating since 1986, Kookaburra Cruises has been making its way up and down the Brisbane River in gorgeous restored paddle wheelers for over 30 years.
I didn’t know what to expect when boarding, but after a smiling welcome from the lovely staff and a few jokes from our onboard entertainer during the safety demo, we felt right at home.
My family is relatively new to the Brisbane region and this was the perfect way to explore and discover the sights along the riverfront.
Starting at Eagle Street Pier, the gentle cruise down the river was so relaxing. The theme was Christmas in July but wasn’t over the top, which I loved. After a few Christmas carols here and there to set the mood, the DJ switched to some new-age music with some old classics.
The food was buffet style and probably my favourite part of the trip – amazing! Kind of like a Christmas at mum’s with the whole family vibe. A smorgasbord of delicious roasts, lasagna, salads and vegetables was followed by a choice of passion fruit slice, berry panna cotta slice or Christmas pudding, made just like Gran’s and to die for. We may or may not have had a double serving of dessert.
The wine list had only a small selection, but we chose a nice bottle of sauvignon blanc to share. The cocktails looked amazing; our neighbouring tables were obviously huge fans, ordering them aplenty!
To cruise the river after dark showed just how gorgeous the city lights up at night with the Story Bridge looking quite special. I would love to do this cruise during the day to see the rest of what the city has to offer! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future promos too, like last month’s kids cruise and eat free!
Kookaburra Cruises offers lunch cruises, high teas and private functions, so there is something to suit everyone.
This is definitely on our list of things to do when the family come for a visit. If you’re just visiting, are new to the area or are looking for something a little different to do, I highly recommend a river cruise. You won’t be disappointed!
