Innovative and inspiring events at National Science Week

The countdown is on to the nation’s favourite celebration of science with National Science Week 2023 kicking off on 12 August.

Many activities across the state will have a connection to the school theme – Innovation: Powering Future Industries with a range of events happening in person and online throughout the week.

Inspiring Australia Queensland Reference Group Chair Professor Sarah Pearson said a mix of online and in-person events means there is something for everyone during National Science Week in Queensland.

“We are looking forward to presenting a jam-packed program with events across the state from hands on science fun to citizen science projects, biodiversity activities, competitions and more,” Professor Pearson said.

“The past few years has also shown us that the world can change in an instant and we are continuing to deliver online programming and activities to allow Queenslanders to have the wonder of science into their homes and classrooms.

“Our launch event this year is hosted by the Gympie Regional STEM hub at Mimburi, Belli Park and will focus on ‘Exploring STEM in the Mary River’. Featuring topics from gully repair to teeny weeny Science to drones and more. Dr Margaret Cook, Research Fellow from the Australia Rivers Institute will deliver a special session on living with floods.

“In 2023, Inspiring Australia Queensland have partnered with Queensland’s largest show – The Ekka to showcase the STEM involved in Agriculture through engaging science shows presented daily at the Ekka Education Stand by Street Science.”

“We will also be bringing a mini STEM fair to the Queensland Children’s Hospital School to engage with students, their families and teachers.”

No matter where you are in the state, there is something for everyone with a STEM-ified program that can be accessed in your local area or online.

From a planetarium concert to marine wildlife, explosive science, science sculpture festivals, a hackathon, dinosaurs and more – the multitude of events across the state will ignite a spark for STEM learning.

While online, people can dive into a range of activities, experiments, videos and more.

Events and activities are happening from Tully in the North to Jundah in Central Queensland , Miles in the West, and the Gold Coast in the South.
