Each year I love watching the fashion shows, fashion sites and scouring the shops after Christmas. It gives me an idea of what we can expect to see filtering through our fashion feeds and into our wardrobes in the year ahead. Sometimes these items are already in our closets and can be rejuvenated. Other times I’ll buy an inexpensive dupe to see if this is a trend I’ll really be reaching for. This year there were some new players on the fashion field. 2025 is going to be an exciting year in fashion.
1. Tenniscore – You’ve seen it at the Australian Open and now it has filtered into our mainstream fashion. Think polo shirts, flippy tennis skirts or mid length preppy pleated skirts in white or navy. Cream, white and touches of red abound. Stripes, fitted blazers or a colourful knit effortlessly draped over the shoulders are also a part of this fun sportsluxe aesthetic. Game, set, match!
2. Feminine Silhouettes and Ladylike Dressing – Cropped Jackets, pussy bow blouses and floaty dresses were seen everywhere last year and are still on trend for 2025. I am all for it. It’s one of my favourite ways to dress. You can layer your lace and tulle and wear your floaty dresses for a romantic feel. Ruffles, lace and florals abound.
3. Polka Dots – Have you noticed that the shops are full of polka dots, spots and dots of all shapes and sizes? I love this timeless print which looks good on everyone. Add a nod with spots on your slingback shoes, on tights or add a lovely spot shirt or skirt. Most of us already have some spots in our wardrobes so pull them out and wear them again. I know I am going to. It always makes me feel French girl chic or a touch of ‘Pretty Woman’.
4. Capes – I love capes and am extremely glad that capes and capelets are back. They are great for our Australian climate and add a sophistication and theatricality to any outfit. Newness can be found in sheer or lace capes which add a feminine touch. Dresses bring the drama with capes attached for a cool sophistication. Many couture runways had their own version.
5. Sheers and Boho – We’ve flirted with this trend the past few years and now sheers are being worn in a more classic way with a sweet cami or slip underneath. It’s a more user-friendly way to wear your sheers and lace and one I love and will be wearing. Layer your sheers for a romantic feel. To dip your toe in pair a sheer top with jeans and heels for a great night out look.
6. Assymetrical – Knit tops with a slouch or off the shoulder, asymmetrical hemlines and handkerchief hems are all big for 2025. I love this cool and edgy look which can be worn by anyone. Fitted dresses with one leg showing and even one-legged pants were all seen on the runways of the major fashion houses.
7. Colours – Colours to embrace in 2025 are blush pink, soft baby blue, cream, chocolate brown, mocha and mulberry. Many of these can mix and match quite well too. Think blush and mulberry, chocolate and soft blue. 2025 sees a comeback of some of our perennial favourites. Don’t throw out those skinny jeans just yet. They will be making a comeback in the cooler months. Plenty of timeless animal prints are around in mostly leopard and zebra. Love it or loathe it the balloon skirt is lingering around again this year.
It’s a wonderful time of year to cull your wardrobe and you might just find some little gems tucked away that can fit these trends effortlessly. It’s also a good time to shop vintage. Many people are culling their wardrobes and the shops are well stocked with preloved treasures. Have fun with fashion in 2025 and develop your own unique style.
