Five travellers from New Zealand have been forced into hotel quarantine in Adelaide after arriving unexpectedly on a flight from Sydney.

South Australia is not yet part of a travel bubble with New Zealand, which currently only New South Wales and the Northern Territory have signed up to.

SA Premier Steven Marshall made the announcement at a press conference this afternoon.

He said three of the people arrived over the weekend and a further two travellers came this morning.

All passengers identified themselves at Adelaide Airport and are now in hotel quarantine in Adelaide, he said.

Mr Marshall said the State Government was now considering its border arrangement with New Zealand.

“We are looking very closely at the arrangements with regards to our borders with New Zealand,” he said.

“They’ve done extraordinarily well and we’re hopeful that we might be able to lift that border restriction with New Zealand when it’s safe to do so.”

Meanwhile, the NSW Premier has announced more easing of restrictions around gatherings after the state recorded zero local cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

Gatherings in outdoor public spaces and group bookings at restaurants will be increased to 30 people from this Friday, however, “mingling” is still off the cards.

Currently, no more than 10 people can sit together at a restaurant and no more than 20 people could gather outside.

“This is good news to allow people to prepare for Christmas and the celebrations over summer,” Gladys Berejiklian said.

“[But] we’re not at the place that we can allow mingling … so everybody has to be seated.”

There is also no change to the 20-person limit for household gatherings as homes

But in good news for those planning their nuptials, from December 1 the number of people who can attend weddings will be lifted to 300 people, subject to the 4-square-metre rule indoors and 2-square-metre rule outdoors.

However there is no change to dancing at weddings, with only the bridal party (of up to 20 people) allowed on the dancefloor.

The Premier said this boost to gathering sizes would allow hospitality venues to plan ahead and roster more staff.

Thousands of demonstrators have rallied across France in tribute to a history teacher beheaded near Paris after discussing caricatures of Islam’s Prophet Mohammed with his class.

Samuel Paty was beheaded on Friday local time in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine by an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee who was shot dead by police.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex stood with citizens, associations and unions demonstrating on the Place de la Republique in Paris in support of freedom of speech and in memory of the 47-year-old slain teacher.

Some held placards reading “I am Samuel” that echoed the “I am Charlie” rallying cry after the 2015 attack on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

A moment’s silence was observed across the square, broken by applause and a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem.

Demonstrators also gathered in major cities including Lyon, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Nantes, Marseille, Lille and Bordeaux.

French authorities, meanwhile, say they have detained an 11th person following the killing.

The Hobart Hurricanes have landed a Big Bash coup signing the number one ranked T20 batsman in the world, England’s Dawid Malan, reports news.com.

With a fight going on between broadcaster Channel Seven and Cricket Australia over the quality of this year’s BBL, the signing of Malan looms as a big tick for the competition.

Malan is the first new international player to commit to playing in the marquee 10th season of the BBL this summer.

The 33-year-old jumped to top spot on the International Cricket Council’s T20 batter rankings following his performances against Australia in September.

He was man of the match, smashing 66 from 43 balls in the first T20, and has a connection with Hurricanes coach, Adam Griffith, who spent time with Malan at English county club Middlesex.

“I’m very excited to have someone of Dawid’s talent and experience join the team”, Griffith said.

“He is a proven performer at T20 cricket on the international stage and I’m looking forward to seeing him hopefully replicate that for the Hurricanes.

“The Big Bash is recognised as one of the leading T20 leagues in the world, and I‘m excited to be joining the Hurricanes”, Malan said.

“I love the whole ethos of Australian sport, and really enjoy playing in front of Aussie crowds.”
