Junk is the new kid on the block in South Bank, although there’s been a Maroochydore version since 2014. It’s got a very funky Asian-café-meets-hipster-hangout vibe that lured me in from Little Stanley Street when I was seeking a lunch spot.
The menu isn’t large, but the items know how to push my buttons when it comes to Asian food I can’t pass up. There’s no table service, so you order up at the open-air bar from a team of staff who look like they could start break dancing at any moment – there are bandanas and fresh vibes for days.
Food service took a reasonable amount of time, and if it hadn’t been a work day I definitely would have taken them up on their suggestion of adding a cheeky shot to my apple and coconut jelly bubble tea. I can’t wait to go back for after work drinks; there’s Tiger on tap and a range of cocktails that would suit the lively vibe perfectly.
The Crispy Pork Belly was divine, served on a salad of shredded papaya and chopped cashew nuts, and the Beef Massaman was the best value at $19 for a beautiful bowl of curried goodness that came with rice included.
I froth over spring rolls at the best of times, so it was no surprise to me that my favourite was the Crispy Peking Duck Spring Rolls! Bias aside, these golden beauties were cooked to perfection and the duck was a gourmet twist that I adored.
Junkboat Asian is a fresh and funky take on Asian fusion, and although the menu is slightly on the expensive side I think it’s worth it for the atmosphere.
