The team at m4m present The Social Culture for October 2020! Get the latest on all the updates and changes to our favourite social platforms for this month.
My goodness things change in a month! Since our last update, Netflix dropped a bombshell on the social media world with the documentary, The Social Dilemma, that explained how easy it is for tech companies to hijack our psychology to feed our social media addiction – making us easy targets to advertisements. If you haven’t watched it, do yourself a favour and sit your kids down to watch it with you.
Trump once again violated Facebook and Twitter’s ‘fake news’ rule, by spreading misinformation
Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ is back on the charts thanks to a viral TikTok video and social media account for a fly that landed on Mike Pence’s head during the VP debate has amassed over 90,000 followers on Twitter! It just goes to show that pretty much anything has the chance to go viral on social especially in these weird times!
Facebook removes 20% image text rule
Content designers and advertisers rejoice! Facebook has recently abandoned it’s long-standing rule for ad images having no more than 20% text. The purpose of the rule was originally intended to reduce noise in the News Feed, but as the platform evolved and began to roll out new ad types that were far more flashy and ‘in your face’, the old rule was kicked to the curb. Advertisers no longer have to use the dreaded text overlay tool to check if their ad doesn’t go over the 20% restriction, leaving more creative freedom for their images. Facebook still recommends keeping text on images to a minimum as they generally perform better.

TikTok has a new rival: YouTube
Another day, another TikTok-like functionality popping up on a social media platform. YouTube is the latest app to jump on the short-form video bandwagon, shortly following Instagram’s footsteps after they released Reels. YouTube Shorts, allows users to create and upload videos of 15-seconds or less, add music and use a number of tools to edit their videos with. Users can jump from one video to another by swiping vertically on the carousel which houses all short videos on YouTube, not just those created with Shorts. This new feature is currently in the testing phase that will be released soon to users in India – so keep your eyes peeled to see if this feature hits the Aussie app soon!

Facebook launches new business suite management tool
Managing Facebook and its various apps can be frustrating at the least, especially with the amount of updates the platform makes! In an attempt to streamline day-to-day management, the social media giant has launched a new app designed to make it easier for businesses to manage their pages and profiles in the one spot. The new app includes tools like posting, messaging, insights and advertising capabilities across the various apps such as Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Other benefits of the new tool include the ability to share posts to Facebook and Instagram at the same (finally! Although be warned it can be glitchy and sometimes fails to schedule across both platforms and sometimes loses the tags you have added). If you already have the Pages Manager app downloaded on your phone it will automatically update to Business Suite. If you don’t have the app, you can download on the iOS or Android app store.

TikTok cracks down on weight loss ads
TikTok is cracking down on weight loss related ads and content that promotes unhealthy eating habits after increasingly being criticised for promoting dangerous diets. Some of the new restrictions include weight loss management products can only reach 18+ users, restrictions on irresponsible claims on weight loss and ads that do promote weight loss cannot promote negative body image or relationships with food. Given that TikTok’s primary audience are teenagers, these new restrictions are definitely a step in the right direction – especially after the increasing concerns with the rise of eating disorders and body shaming TikTok has been involved in over the past few of months!
