She Society were lucky enough to visit the International Cake Show Australia which keeps getting bigger and better every year. On now at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre it runs from 10am to 4pm every day until Sunday. This annual event attracts some of the best cake decorators and artisans from around Australasia, as well as fostering the next generation with categories for students, some only in the 6 – 10-year-old age bracket. It is a feast for the senses.
Highlights this year include Dan Greensill’s massive 3m High Bumble Bee Transformer Cake. It must be seen to be believed. Dan has only been involved in cake making and decorating for four years but is already a master at his craft. He says this one will be cut on Sunday so visitors will be given a taste of his marvellous creation.
There is the Sugar House of Horror, a rainforest exhibit and Barbie cakes made by Verusca Walker. This writer was amazed by the floral cake art and this year the cake show has incorporated a Floriade Market set up as a french flower market, part of a global sugar art collaboration. One flower alone is 70 cm tall. The flowers look so real, you’ll want to pick them not eat them.
I loved the Haute Couture Marquee where ten Australasian designers have created magnificent wedding cakes all inspired by a George Wu wedding gown. George Wu is a couture designer whose atelier is based right here in Brisbane. These cakes defy imagination and would provide a magnificent centrepiece at any wedding.
She Society were lucky enough to visit on the day of judging and you’ll be able to see who took out the top prizes this weekend. I loved all the bookish and fantasy character cakes, and it was the Alice in Wonderland cake which stole my heart. There are demonstrations from some of the best in the business, the latest cake decorating supplies on hand plus classes including for cupcakes and cookies.
To see these magnificent creations for yourself head to South Brisbane this weekend.
