The best kind of festival is where you do what you want, right? Right.

Imagine sitting on the grass and gnawing on a giant hunk of meat from some of Brisbane’s Best BBQ Foodies whilst sipping on some of Australia (and the World)’s most delicious craft brews.

And ’cause we love everything BBQ and Beer (and so do you), we will have some of the Masters of the ‘Que and the Brew showing us what they do, giving us an in-depth education and insider training. See who will be gracing the BBQ stage in the Festival Program.

Cruise the BBQ Arena where some of Australia’s BEST BBQ Crews will be battling it out right in front of your eyes. They’ll tease you with their smoke and sauce creations, melting their meats to their final flavour destination whilst competing for a prize pool of over $15,000.

Whichever way you want to plan your Roadshow, there will be a kick arse Live Music lineup to tickle your ear drums and play soundtrack to a truly awesome Summer Saturday.

We bring to you the BBQ & Beer Roadshow. You’re welcome.

Icelandic Thordis Elva and Australian Tom Stranger were a happy, ordinary teenage couple, until one evening when Tom raped his then-girlfriend. Their relationship ended without one word about the traumatic event that had preceded their breakup. Nine years later, Thordis reaches out to Tom via email.  Another eight years, and hundreds of searingly honest emails later, Thordis and Thom have decided they’re done carrying guilt and shame, and travel across the globe and meet face-to-face. Their extraordinary journey is chronicled in their joint non-fiction narrative South of Forgiveness.

A Guide To Mindfulness – A Forum for Discussion

Drop dead gorgeous, sassy and smart, Ruby Wax brings her new one-woman show Frazzled, based on her best-selling book ‘A Mindfulness Guide to the Frazzled’, to the Australian stage.  Once crazy, now less so, Ruby gives a tour of the mind – how to use it and not lose it. This event is a follow up to her sell out touring show and book ‘Sane New World’, which helped us understand why we sabotage our sanity with our own thinking. Graduating from Oxford three years ago, Ruby knows her stuff! The much-loved US born comedian, actor and writer has been honoured with the title of poster girl for mental illness. She might not be sane herself, but she does a pretty good imitation. Funny and insightful, this event is your passport to saner living.

Lindsey Stirling remains fearless enough to always dream big.  The American electric violin extraordinaire, dancer, performance artist and composer will visit Australia & New Zealand this April for a national tour, performing solo headliner shows in Perth, Brisbane & Auckland and as part of Cool For Summer festival in Sydney and Melbourne.

In four years since the release of her 2012 self-titled debut, the electronic music impresario, classically trained violinist, dancer, and artist quietly and humbly became one of the 21st century’s most innovative stars by clinging to her ground-breaking vision of cinematic violin-driven electronic music.

Attracting nearly 8 million subscribers and 1.3 billion-plus views on YouTube by 2016, Forbes placed Lindsey at #4 on its yearly YouTube artists list, making her the highest-ranked female. Her headline tours would play to a cumulative audience of over 500,000 people worldwide, and her literary debut The Only Pirate at the Party—co-written with her sister Brook S. Passey—became a New York Times Bestseller.

In Presence Through Movement, Kim Eng facilitates an awakening through the body and guides us in a harmonious synthesis of action and stillness. Using the ancient modalities of yin yoga, qigong, and tai chi, Kim weaves these three practices into a presence-infused flow, which helps to restore balance to your physical and energy body. This movement practice gives us an opportunity to observe, inquire, integrate, and release the old emotional wounds that Eckhart calls the "pain body".

Suitable for most physical fitness levels, these movement practices stimulate and activate the body’s energy channels, clear energy blockages (including the pain body), and increase overall well- being and vitality. Through instruction, meditation, and movement, we access and learn to sustain presence in our everyday lives.

For many years, the Australian public thought they knew Magda Szubanski. But it wasn’t until 2013, when Madga came out on national television and subsequently released her memoir, Reckoning, that Australia truly got to know the real Magda Szubanski.

Please join us for this special breakfast with Magda, where we’ll delve deeper into Magda’s story of self-acceptance, her work campaigning for equality, and the woman behind the characters we all know so well.

If there’s one thing we’ve learnt in recent years, it’s that when Magda Szubanski speaks, the people of Australia listen. And we can’t wait to bring her to the Business Chicks stage in 2017.

Drambuie, the infamous Scotch Whisky Liqueur, is celebrating the revival of its most renowned cocktail serve The Rusty Nail bringing the festivities to Brisbane with a 5-week bar experience ‘A Night with the Nail’. The evening will be hosted at The Walrus Club located at 543 Coronation Dr, Toowong, downstairs from the award winning Regatta Hotel.

Jazz legend Herb Armstrong will be one of many treats awaiting patrons on A Night with the Nail’s launch on June 2. A Night with the Nail will continue its recurring ‘Drambuie-themed’ evening each Friday night until June 30 with an exclusive Drambuie experience and live jazz music, as guests enjoy the charm and seduction of the Prohibition-inspired speakeasy that is The Walrus Club.

At a time when the legendary carousing of the Rat Pack came to prominence, the Rusty Nail was adopted by the scene, confirming the drink's iconic status and establishing its place in pop culture history.

More recently, the cocktail was the drink of choice of Saul Goodman and featured in the very first episode of Netflix’s TV series Better Call Saul.

Message from the Artistic Director Katie Noonan

Hear and be Heard. My hope for QMF 2017 is that Queenslanders from all walks of life will find their voice through music and that the power of song will help to shine a light on issues that impact us all. I am passionate about creating transformative musical experiences for audiences throughout our state. As a

Queensland artist whose own career was kickstarted by QMF, I want to help the next generation of artists thrive. Across the Festival, talented Queenslanders will take the stage, standing proudly alongside world-class Australian musicians. No one does it like QMF – I believe our community engagement and education legacy is unrivalled. Our extensive program spans community, contemporary, classical and education events right across this big, beautiful state, involving a huge range of Queenslanders.

There are also many amongst us whose stories have been untold for too long. There has been an overwhelming groundswell of support from our many partners to help give voice to those who face significant challenges in their lives through projects like You’re The Voice.

To our many participants, artists, partners and communities, thank you for being part of this amazing journey – I can’t wait to hear your song!

Jacob’s Ladder and the Metro Arts laneway

Brisbane’s Jacob’s Ladder and the Metro Arts laneway will be given a new life this July with two pop-up art installations courtesy of performance collective The Good Room, designed to activate Brisbane spaces with world-class contemporary art by local artists.

Supported by Brisbane City Council, the projects bring together more than forty of Brisbane’s best artists, creatives and writers in highly visual and engaging activations highlighting the calibre of work made by Brisbane artists.

From Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 July 20, Brave New Worlds will see a series of 40 flags, printed with new works of art, flying proudly along the familiar bright red staircase of Jacob’s Ladder, connecting Brisbane CBD’s Edward Street with Spring Hill.

Turning silk flags into canvases, artists were asked to design a flag for the world they’d like to live in – offering up their vision of what qualities they want in a brave new world to come for hundreds of pedestrians each day.

This installation brings together 20 of Brisbane’s best visual artists - including Courtney Coombs, who has exhibited her work around the world and is a 2012 Churchie Award finalist; Naomi Blacklock, 2016 finalist for Perth Institute of Contemporary Art’s national Hatched award; and two-time Archibald Prize finalist Sam Cranstoun.

A week after the flags of Brave New Worlds come down, a new world pops up - this time off Edward St, in the laneway down the side of Metro Arts.

A one-day event on Friday 28 July 017, This Frozen Moment is an audio installation showcasing more than 20 of Brisbane’s finest authors, poets, and spoken-word artists.

Visitors will enter a heritage-listed laneway lined with suspended origami sculptures; each encasing a small speaker device that whispers a moment of a possible world, to combine as an installation of cascading whispers – a feast for the eyes and ears.

A LA BOITE & QUT CREATIVE INDUSTRIES PRODUCTION

A party on the beach, drugs, booze and surf. But by morning a young woman lies dead on the sand, beaten and raped. Who is responsible? This incredible human drama examines the social impulse to violence within Australian culture, within young males, within us all.

Blackrock, Nick Enright’s hard-hitting modern classic, is one of those plays that grabs you and does not let go. Blackrock builds on several interlocking themes, first of sexual violence, of class and generational conflict, and the difference between a friend and a mate.

This unique collaboration between La Boite and QUT Creative Industries sees the next generation of actors, QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts, Final Year Acting Students take on the iconic young roles alongside an ensemble of professional actors.

    The Tivoli

Tina Arena has been part of the fabric of Australian music and pop culture for the past 40 years. Her voice has sent shivers up the spines of three generations of music lovers from her early days on Young Talent Time, to her hugely successful debut album Strong as Steel, her incredible international success and ten times platinum Don’t Ask (1994), the multi-platinum In Deep (1997), and followed up in 2001 with the critically acclaimed Just Me.

A 40-year recording career by any singer is an extraordinary milestone, and Tina Arena is the only Australian artist to earn a gold or platinum certification for each of her original albums, in every decade since the 1970s right through to now. In fact, every album in her career has gone gold, platinum or multi-platinum.

Tina said, “Today I feel I have finally reached a place where I am 100% comfortable with who I am, and I am free to enjoy my life and my work. The past forty years have indeed been a journey from innocence to understanding, and I can’t wait to celebrate that with Australia.

Openair Cinemas is back for another yearly stint of outdoor movie-going, and they're doing so with balloons and scares. While the annual event's season kicks off with Logan Lucky on October 6, their Halloween session is certain to attract interest.

Those keen on more thrills, this time of the mind-melting kind, can follow it up with Darren Aronofsky's must-be-seen-to-be-believed mother! the following evening; however there's plenty of other movie magic on offer for the six weeks up until November 19. Atomic Blonde's action antics, Kingsman: The Golden Circle's irreverent look at espionage, and Blade Runner 2049's sci-fi sequel spectacle join the classic likes of Grease in sing-along mode and perennial fave Dirty Dancing.

The 27-movie lineup goes on, and so does the rest of the fun, with alternative entertainment, live music and DJ performances also on the bill. As always, there'll be food and drinks available on-site — and not just popcorn and choc tops — and you can also bring your own booze-free picnic.

A lot can happen in five years. Two people can meet, fall in love, get married and then see their wedded bliss come to an end. That's the tale of budding writer Jamie and rising actress Cathy in The Last Five Years, which sees him share their story from the beginning, her start at the end and work backwards, and both sing about it.

Of course, a lot can happen in 16 years as well. That's how long it has been since the show premiered in Chicago, and then made its way to off-Broadway the next year. In 2015, it became a film starring Anna Kendrick. Now, Aussies Lizzie Moore (Kiss Me Kate) and Kurt Phelan (Dirty Dancing) are stepping onto Brisbane Powerhouse's stage and stepping into the narrative, in a production by the folks behind Carrie the Musical.

Catch their efforts between October 7 and 14, with the show playing Thursday to Sunday between those dates. And, if you need an added incentive, let an account of how Moore and Phelan first met get you excited for their on-stage antics. At a surprise party for Wicked's Lucy Durack, they both hid in a bathtub.

If you could learn a new skill, what would it be? Whipping up a sangria and paella feast? Making restaurant-quality cocktails? Perfecting the ultimate duo of layered Italian foods — aka lasagne and tiramisu?

Concocting a Greek spread of dips, salad and halva; getting fashion tips over champagne; discovering to make sushi — also over champagne: they're all on offer as well, with everyone from Byblos and Gusto da Gianni to Atalanta and Sono involved.

Throw in two wine sessions — one a blind tasting of six wines, the other dedicated to Moss Wood — and you could get a dose of tasty, educational fun almost every day of the week. Prices range from zilch to $125, and while some classes run multiple times, others are on-offs.

Looking beneath the surface is becoming quite the rewarding pastime in Spring Hill. And, climbing beneath the surface as well. Fresh from being transformed into an illuminated wonderland, the suburb's reservoirs will be the site of another piece of art. This time, it's a blend of sound, film and kinetic sculpture.

Don't be fooled by the rather plain name — Art in the Reservoir promises a creative treat over October 7 and 8. Open from 9am until 4pm as part of Brisbane Open House, it'll host a commissioned installation by artists Caitlin Franzmann, Dale Gorfinkel and Ross Manning. In keeping with the weekend's theme of exploring the city's spaces and considering its past, the work will ask visitors to contemplate the space's original use by evoking the memory of water.

Just what that entails will be discovered on the day, but attendees are advised to wear enclosed shoes.

At Brisbane Self Publishing Service we think it’s a shame many aspiring authors feel daunted by the process involved in publishing their book. That’s why we have developed our unique book publication framework – The Five ‘C’s of Self Publishing; a practical, user-friendly approach which demystifies the process of publishing a book. And, to kick start this process, we are presenting this strategy in a hands-on, informative workshop – TELL YOUR STORY Self-Publishing Workshop. During the  workshop you’ll learn about all of the stages required to transform your manuscript into a printed book and/or ebook.

WORKSHOP FEE: $46.50 (plus admin fee); Early Bird Tickets available – $42.00

Included in the workshop registration price:

    • A PDF copy of Self Publishing Checklist: The Five ‘C’s of Self Publishing
    • 8-page printed workbook to accompany Powerpoint presentation
    • A printed information sheet on standard industry book trim sizes
    • Morning tea provided

Cirque Africa is considered to be a jawdropping explosion of colour, culture, rhythm and showstoppers. Starring 22 performers from six African countries, its a highly visual show that will take your breath away!

“Cirque Africa has been called the ‘Lion King on steriods’,” said director Papa Africa, aka Winston Ruddle. The Zimbabwe-born Ruddle, draws many of his talented cast from the ranks of the Hakuna Matata Acrobats trained at the school he established in Tanzania in 2003.

The show is uplifting, celebratory and joyous. It’s also a critically acclaimed acrobatic and dance experience, born of Ruddle’s desire to celebrate Africa’s colour and people with audiences all over the world.

Award-winning company, Wax Lyrical Productions, presents the world premiere of Nineteen, a dark comedy about four young men, Noah, George, Adam and Josh, living in a share house. From the outside they seem like fun, loveable larrikins but underneath the bravado and binge drinking lurks something more sinister.

From beers and brotherhood to loss and loneliness, this endearing story uncovers the hidden side of finding yourself in a world filled with complexity and confusion. Crafted from interviews with over ninety young people, the four mates at the heart of Nineteen reflect the hopes and fears of the next generation. Amongst the laughs and unmistakable Australian sense of humour, writer/director Shane Pike unmasks the complexity and fear our brothers and mates are living with which, if left uncovered, can result in the greatest of tragedy.

Everyone knows how superhero stories work.

Save day, rescue damsel, witty one liner, post credits scene. But Michelle Zahner doesn’t want to do that. She wants to ask the real questions: Why are there never pockets in lycra costumes? How do heroes make rent? What if there’s no villain? And why don’t we have a word for a male damsel?

For this mission she’s combining storytelling, poetry, comedy and physical theatre. With an accidental superhero, a lost journalist and a girl who doesn’t need saving she explores what we expect from heroes, and what might happen if we get it.

Four women not afraid to make a statement, throw shade at the modern world in this gutsy, high-energy circus production. Witnesses to a generation of YouTubers, Instafamous stars, ‘leaning in’ and ‘having it all’, they find a common thread in the tension between their internal and external lives.

Defiantly tackling stereotypes, these women examine the different faces they present to the world in their professional and personal lives. Through group acrobatics and aerials this comedic, thought-provoking show investigates social expectations.

Celebrate 30 years of the iconic movies PRINCESS BRIDE and DIRTY DANCING this December!

On Saturday 2 December, Kristian Fletcher presents a series of special 30th anniversary screenings of the 1987 cult movie classics PRINCESS BRIDE and DIRTY DANCING at Metro Arts, 109 Edward St Brisbane City.

Whilst home sick in bed, a young boy’s grandfather reads him a story called The Princess Bride: Buttercup has been chosen as the bride of Prince Humperdinck but still laments the death of her one true love, Westley. The result is a crowd-favourite and one of the most quotable movies ever made!

Princess Bride was made for a modest budget and was a somewhat sleeper hit when first released, however great sales on home video has ensured its ongoing status and appeal.

On the otherhand, Dirty Dancing was one of the highest grossing films of 1987 - making a profit of over $200 million. Early reactions to the film were mixed on, but it caught on with audiences during its cinematic run and has built a following, particularly amongst female audiences.

QSO continues its annual tradition of presenting Messiah, in 2017 with Handel specialist Erin Helyard at the helm.

This is an oratorio you must witness, if not every year, then this once. Telling the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and resurrection through music and solo arias, interspersed with parts for compelling chorus, Messiah includes one of the most famous pieces of Baroque choral music ever created: the rousing Hallelujah chorus.
