Producers of Bad Neighbours and the co-screenwriter of Crazy Rich Asians have brought another hilarious and unapologetically explicit story of identity and self-discovery to the screen, with Joy Ride. Also known for their work in The Boys TV series, Joy Ride could only be entertainment to the fullest.
As part of the audience we could not help but laugh out loud at some of the antics with moments of sadness, tears and a few OMG situations when we thought did I just see that?
I loved this movie, a fabulous way of tuning out with a meaningful story and fabulous actors whose characters all had their own issues. One of their lines made me think about its significance; If you do not know where you come from how do you know who you are?
The Story
Joy Ride is an American comedy filmed in 2023 directed by Adel Lim. It centres on childhood best friends Audrey (Ashley Park) and Lolo (Sherry Cola), who are accompanied by Audrey’s former roommate Kat (Stephanie Hsu) her college friend turned Chines pop star, and Lolo’s eccentric cousin Deadeye (Sabrina Wu). They embark on a once-in-a-lifetime international adventure with consequences they did not foresee and when the fun begins.
What began as a business trip by the organised Audrey soon turns in mayhem as these four most unlikely friends, with their diverse personalities, decide to seek out Audrey’s birth mother. Audrey’s well-meaning plans veer right off track when her normally stable life seems like a tumble dryer set on high.
Their travel plans soon expanded from the time they set out on their journey across China. It was of no surprise when ongoing complications popped up as the story unfolded, more than they bargained for, including quick visits to Seoul and Paris. Their no-hold barred, epic experience turns into a journey of bonding, friendship, belonging and wild debauchery that reveal the universal truth of what it means to know and love who you are.
