How often do we say if only I had a robot to do all the work? And given all the talk about AI (Artificial Intelligence), the soon-to-be-released film Subservience is perfect timing.
This 2024 American sci-fi thriller forces the mind to rethink and reconsider what we wish for. I cannot help but wonder if the direction we are heading in with this futuristic world will be beneficial or the ruination of the human race. Watching Subservience is an interesting prompt.
The principal photography for Subservience began at the Nu Boyana Film Studios in Sofia, Bulgaria which would account for the stunning mountainous backgrounds. The Nu Boyana Studios is the largest film production services studio in Eastern Europe.
I loved the use of an analog car in a story based on advanced technology.
The Story
Megan Fox stars as Alice, a lifelike artificially intelligent android, who can take care of any family and home.
Seeking help with the housework, Nick (Michele Morrone), a struggling average middle-class father and construction worker, purchases Alice after his wife Maggie suffers a cardiac arrest and is hospitalised.
Maggie, the mother of two young children, undergoes successful heart transplant surgery by robotic surgeons, and her future looks positive until she returns home.
Alice, the humanoid robot has absorbed the daily routines within the family environment and suddenly develops a self-awareness, wanting everything her new family has to offer.
Her targeted affections start with Nick her new owner. She becomes more than a family support unit for Nick when she is upfront and personal to the point she is willing to kill for him, his family and associates at risk.
The plot thickens as does Alice’s ability to corrupt other robots following an examination in the lab and hints at a potential larger threat. There is nothing like human compassion. When a family sticks together so does their power.
