#SheReviews Film: Everything In Between

October 19, 2022

Every now and again I receive a new film to review that absolutely blows me away. This year Everything In Between is that film. It was filmed entirely in Sydney and directed by Nadi Sha. It truly is a gem of a movie. This film tells the story of a lonely teenager who doesn’t fit in and feels he has nothing to live for – until he meets a mysterious woman, so full of life, that he immediately bonds with her. It’s a beautifully told coming – of – age drama and a tender film full of heart that will ultimately touch your heart.

The Story

18 – year old Jay has had enough of life. 28 – year old Liz can’t get enough of it. And as Jay stands on a cliff top contemplating putting an end to his existence , Liz lands in town on the latest exciting leg of her adventures backpacking across the globe. A sliding door moment brings this unlikely pair together. Their bond is deep and immediate – much to the chagrin of Jay’s wealthy but jaded socialite parents.

Unfortunately Liz’s laissez fare lifestyle is brought to an abrupt halt by a life threatening mystery illness and, as Jay becomes more entwined in her plight, all four are forced to come to terms with their own world views in this absolutely harrowing, provocative, but ultimately uplifting saga.

The Cast

Jordan Dulieu ( Jason ‘ Jay’ Knight ) has been in and out of therapy since high school. With no friends, an oppressive mother and philandering father, Jay has nowhere to turn. But when he meets Liz Myers ( Freya Benjamin), a vibrant and enigmatic world traveller, his life is turned around.

Jordan brings a brooding intensity to Jay – who learns that life can change in a moment. Freya is perfect as the bubbly Liz, who’s been living a laissez – faire lifestyle after being brought up in a commune. The role is played with dignity and sensitivity by Freya whose ethereal character, with a beauty of spirit, will linger in your mind long after the credits roll.

Parents David (Dave) Knight (Martin Crewes) and Meredith (Dee) Knight ( Gigi Edgley) are so believable in their roles. We all know people just like them. Dave is the lovable rogue who has an excessive and narcissistic take on life and though successful on the surface he plugs his soul with hedonistic pleasures, all the while functioning as a high level executive. Events will lead him to challenge his lifestyle choices and see what is really important in life. The experienced Martin Crewes ( Daylight Robbery and Resident Evil ) brings a depth and humanity to this character which elevates him above the moral quagmire of his existence.

His wife Meredith is an inveterate social climber. She seems to be always put together, the perfect trophy wife, but as discord and dilemmas raise their heads due to Jay’s predicament, she finds solace in the vodka bottle. Played with humour, insight and sensitivity this dramatic role is a distinct departure for this fan favourite who you would recognise from worldwide hits like Farscape and The Secret Life of Us.

This new Australian drama explores the human condition with empathy and insight. It’s a multi – layered take on life which will fuel your emotions. Everything in Between invites us to question our beliefs and encourages self reflection. Is life simply moments? Is it better to feel pain than nothing at all? Is there a formula for fulfilment?

My husband and I both loved this movie and our emotions were raw by the end. It’s a little bit magical and told with sensitivity, warmth and a good dose of Australian sensibility. Everything In Between is a triumphant piece of Australian film making which deserves to be seen by a wide audience. It reminds us of our own humanity, youth, life experiences and everything in between. Everything In Between will be in cinemas around Australia from October 20. I urge you to just go and see it for yourself. I will be heading to the cinema to watch it again on the big screen.
