The epic spectacle of medieval jousting, the world’s original extreme sport, is coming to Victoria this month, when Kryal Castle hosts the Australian Jousting Championships.

Australia’s best will go head-to-head in the high impact jousting competition, which is set to take place on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of May.

The competition is exactly as it was in the high middle-ages – the competitor’s armour is replica medieval, the rules are true to history and the hits from the three metre wood lances are big and bone-shaking.

The winner of the Australian Jousting Championship will be determined on how many lances a jouster breaks on his or her opponent, with the aim to break as many as possible on the opponent’s shield.

World champion jouster and experience director at Kryal Castle, Mr Phillip Leitch said it took immense skill, advanced horsemanship and years of training to be able to joust at a competitive level.

“Australian jousters are among some of the best in the world and this will be a rare chance to see knights in action,” said Leitch an ex-special forces soldier and former world champion jouster.

“There’s nothing like the rush of watching knights on horseback thundering towards each other at 40 kilometres an hour and then hearing the deafening crunch as the lance breaks and splinters. It truly is an epic spectacle.”

Leitch will be taking on a field of seven jousters, including NSW husband and wife team Liberty and Rodney Deaman. The remaining field is made up of Queensland’s Amanda Challen and Victoria’s Alexander Gay, Renae Marisma, Gregory Nash, and Ken Spillard.

As well as jousting, the weekend will be packed with medieval entertainment and next-level family fun, including:

● Medieval merchants
● Archery displays
● Axe throwing
● Kids activities including potion making, face pointing and much more

Kryal Castle’s gates will open at 10am and the Australian Jousting Championship will run from 11.30am and 2pm, on both days.

Australia’s national jousting champion will be announced immediately after the competition on Sunday May 26th.
