Feel like some thrills and spills? Released this year, The Black Demon fiction horror film is for you. A family is stranded on an old oil rig in the small town of Baja, on a peninsula in north-western Mexico, unaware that for hundreds of year’s fishermen shared tales of a mythical shark.
Was it a coincidence that as I review this movie it coincides with World Ocean Day 2023 and the theme is Planet Ocean? The Black Demon (“El Demonio Negro“), certainly generates a fair amount of suspense, as a gigantic, ferocious 18 metre megalodon prowls the waters.
If you thought Jaws caused you to hesitate when entering the water, then maybe you should think again. This living nightmare becomes an epic battle between man and nature and causes reasons to question the integrity of individuals and a corporations’ objectives.
The focus and graphics was not as much about the shark but about human dynamics; ethics, family, survival, hardship, disappointment and secrets. Yes, we see the open mouth, razored teeth and huge shadow moving underwater, but there is more to the story than the a big fish in a big sea.
The main character, Josh Lucas, plays the role of Paul Sturges. Josh spent a few years in Australia on the show Snowy River, The McGregor Saga. He has also starred in a number of high profile movies such as Ford v Ferrari, American Psycho, The Deep end, A Beautiful Mind, Hulk, Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon, and many more.
The Story
Oilman company inspector, Paul Sturges, is sent to check on an oil rig known to the locals as El Diamane. Having fond memories of the town, he decides it would also be an idyllic vacation for his family and brings his wife Ines and their two children, teenager Audrey and younger brother Tommy.
When they arrive, they discover that the town is in ruins, a shell of its former self.
There seems to be some urgency to get Paul out to the rig, so he catches the first boat, leaving his family on the shore.
He discovers that not only is the rig dilapidated and hazardous, but somehow a gigantic, ferocious shark lives there, demonstrably protective of its living quarters.
Unfortunately, due to the intimidation from the local men and their safety threatened, Paul’s family decides to follow him. Things begin to change and they all wind up stranded on the rig, along with two remaining workers, Chato and Junior. To their horror they also are confronted with the vengeful megalodon big tooth species of mackerel shark that lived millions of years ago, thought extinct.
Stranded, under constant attack and even worse, time is running out for the rig itself. Paul and his family must somehow find a way to get back to shore alive before it strikes again. Will everyone make it?
Legend says it only comes when summoned.
