CIRCLES FIESTA: Creating Safer Communities for Brisbane

November 25, 2022

Friday 25th November to Saturday 10th December

With the focus on transforming Brisbane into the lead up to the Olympic Games, Chrysalis Projects is laying down the challenge; let’s make Brisbane the safest city for women and children in the world by leading an Arts Against Gender Based Violence alliance.

The Brisbane’s arts community is bolstering the fight against gender-based violence targeting women and children in a unique programme, YOUR INNER CIRCLES, aimed at creating safer communities for Brisbane’s women and children.

Arts Against Gender Based Violence is an alliance led by Chrysalis and co-founders, Carmel Haugh and Bec McIntosh who want people to know that the arts has a multifold power in making major social change, using it to tackle Gender Based Violence.

YOUR INNER CIRCLES, addresses violence against women which has been threaded throughout our art history and we need a fresh approach to how we tell these stories.

“There is a lot to unpack and deconstruct around the depiction or portrayal of violence against women in all art forms.”

“At its worst, the canon of western arts has been glorifying violence, and at the least, normalising it. We want to change that story. As strong women working in the arts our whole lives, we want to lead a conversation with our inner circles to make Brisbane safer for women and children.” said Carmel of Chrysalis Projects.

Chrysalis will launch their YOUR INNER CIRCLES campaign activities in line with the annual United Nations Women’s 16-days of Activism which starts on Friday November 25 and ends Friday 10th of December.

Campaign highlights include the “Circles Fiesta” a micro-festival on Saturday 3 November at the Judith Wright Contemporary Art Centre where the arts community will host fearless and artful conversations that promote safety and equity in our city and its’ cultural and community places. Tickets for this are now on sale here.

“We all have the right to feel safe and we want Brisbane to be the safest place in the world for all women and children. Our arts inner circle will mark the UN Women’s Global 16 days, calling for Brisbane to become a safe place for women and children.” Chrysalis Projects Rebecca McIntosh says.

INNER CIRCLES has the support and participation of Micah Projects, which operates in Brisbane as a not-for-profit organisation committed to providing a range of supports to Brisbane women and children, to ensure they feel safe and free from fear of domestic, family and sexual violence.

INNER CIRCLES is also supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. INNER CIRCLES will officially launch at QPAC on Friday 25th of November with the event highlight of the program being;
