#SheReviews: The Cost Movie

October 1, 2023

The Cost is an intense, provoking Australian movie that pricks your conscience as two vigilante men plan the ultimate revenge for their wife/sister’s gruesome death. The perpetrator had been released from prison living a diffident life, believing he had served his time. But families never forget.

From the very beginning, multi-award-winning Australian director, writer and producer, Matthew Holmes captured us with his moralistic storyline that made me squirm in my seat.

For some, the violent aspects may be confronting but necessary given the subject and story.

Would revenge be your ultimate healer or would the consequences of your actions make you no better than the offender himself?

A morally complex, perfectly paced disturbing movie that leaves you feeling drained and wondering what you would have done if placed in a similar position.

An excellent thought-provoking psychological film that explores, in particular, the male instincts. The characters are superbly portrayed by our top-notch Australian actors to the very end.

The Story

Filmed in Victoria, it is set over a gripping 48 hours, The Cost tells the story of two ordinary men David (Jordan Fraser-Trumble) and Aaron (Damon Hunter) who abduct a newly released felon Troy (Kevin Dee) who committed a horrific crime years before.

Intent on delivering their brutal form of justice, David and Aaron come face-to-face with the man who destroyed their lives.

But will they succeed in their violent quest for justice – or will the true cost of vengeance prove too high?

It forces us to ask the age-old question, what is real justice? Is vigilantism ever justified? What would happen when moral citizens cross that line?
